National Donut Day Has Got us Feelin’ Groovy

We know there are plenty of silly, made-up holidays: backwards day, stuffed mushroom day, do a grouch a favor day, and even napping day (a truly great one if you ask us) … but did you know there’s a National Donut Day?

Even better yet — it’s just two days away! This Friday, June 7th marks National Donut Day — an entire 24 hours of celebrating sweet baked and fried goodness. Groovy Donuts has got the goods, and yes — they’re sweet. The holiday celebration actually started in 1938 to with the Salvation Army’s “Donut Girls” or “Donut lassies” in WWI, who gave out donuts in order to help with troop morale.

“National Donut Day is our favorite day of the year,” Andrew Gauthier, owner of Groovy Donuts, said. “It gives us the opportunity to see a lot of people we don’t normally see, and work with local businesses on fun collaborations. Not to mention, we get to take part in honoring a tradition that’s been going on since the ’30s!”

This year marks the 2nd annual National Donut Day celebrated by Groovy Donuts, in partnership with the Peanut Barrel. Together, the pair is offering their usual fare, but replacing any buns with a glazed donut bun, or apple fritter. adding donuts as dessert options, and even custom long island iced tea donuts.

“Every year, the Peanut Barrel celebrates National Donut Day by reminding all ‘we doughn’t do donuts,” Jennifer and Joe Bell of the Peanut Barrel said. “This year we are thrilled to partner with Groovy Donuts to declare ‘we’re doin’ donuts …with burgers, beer, long islands or coffee.’ We are especially excited to team with Andrew and Monica, two young entrepreneurs, working hard to establish their business with a flair for the past and all things groovy.”

Andrew is equally excited to partner with the Peanut Barrel, who has become a staple in the East Lansing area, since opening in 1973. “I’ve always considered it my favorite burger place and really look forward to combining our donuts with their burgers!”

Groovy Donuts is also partnering with Iorio Gelato, at Horrock’s Farm market. They will be offering groovy donut gelato sandwiches — a light, fluffy yeast donut with chocolate icing, and a scoop of gelato.

And last but not least, Groovy Donuts will be offering A FREE CLASSIC DONUT (what you’ve been waiting for, right?!) with any beverage purchase. They are open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their East Lansing and Williamston locations.
